Economic theory suggests that foreign direct investment (FDI) can generate several benefits for economies. In this sense, it can facilitate these economies’ access to international flows of knowledge, technology and other foreign resources, promote economic growth and development and, in addition, increase national welfare (Hanson, 2001; Alfaro, 2016).
